Overview

Rectangular board with a pine base and various different wood veneers fixed to it. The sides and ends are jarrah edged and the top is divided into six segments by jarrah cross pieces. These six segments are further split in three with inlay of various wood. The outer segments, either side are of light coloured wood with ten holes, two rows of five in each segment while the centre row is inlayed with diagonal strips.
On the back is a damaged white paper label with text written in pencil and pen. Based on other items the label is complete would say 'EDUCATION DEPT., W.A. / Name Vernon Marsh / Centre Armadale Age 13 / School Armadale Class VI
Commenced 5.2.29 Finished ... / I hereby certify that this model is absolutely and / entirely the work of the scholar whose name it bears / Instructor.'

Historical information

Made by Mr Vernon Marsh of Armadale State School, Third Road Armadale. Made age 12 in 1918. An example of Manual Arts projects conducted in the late 1920's in schools to develop hand skills for future use in employment. Armadale State School was the only school in the Southern Corridor at the time to have a manual arts facility.
