First World War Postcard of ‘Egyptian Types and Scenes - Sudanese Men’, Egypt
1900 - 1919A black and white postcard depicting four young men wearing traditional Sundanese attire and carrying throwing sticks. All are bare chested with cloth tied around their waists. Two of the men wear a flat headdress each with a feather, while another wears a tall ponytail. The final man has a Mohican type of hair style. Each man has different necklaces and arm decorations. The postcard has some damage to the corners and several marks front and back. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse is a pale green colour with proforma printing.
During First World War, Allied soldiers stationed in Egypt, including Australians, New Zealanders, and British troops frequently bought and mailed local commercial postcards. These cards often featured staged studio portraits, exoticized "pin-up" images, or everyday street scenes of Egyptian women.
