First World War Postcard of ‘The Shore of The Nile’, Cairo

1900 - 1919
Overview

A black and white artistic postcard depicting several boats and a barge moored by ropes at the shore of a wide river. One of the boats appears to be a paddle steamer, while at least 3 others have sail masts. In the background of the image is a large metal bridge standing on stone piers and behind that buildings can be seen that must sit on the other side of the river. The bank of the river in the image is sloping and rocky with several palm trees and other foliage growing there. In the foreground two men sit on the riverbank looking out over the river. The postcard is in good condition with no visible damage. The reverse is a pale green colour with several marks. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

It is likely that this image depicts the Qasr El-Nil Bridge official inauguration in 1872. It was reconstructed in the 1930s and still stands today.
