First World War Postcard of ‘Egyptian Types and Scenes - An Arab Woman’, Egypt
1900 - 1919A black and white studio postcard depicting a woman in local dress. She wears scarves on her head that drop below her shoulders and a dark coloured dress of the same material as one of her head scarves. The dress has no sleeves and is partially open at the front. The woman wears necklaces that cover some of the dress opening and several bangles on each arm. Her right hand holds one handle of a clay pot and her left part of her dress skirt. The postcard has some damage with marks on the front and small stains on the back. The front is printed with a description of the image and the reverse is a pale green colour with proforma printing.
During First World War, Allied soldiers stationed in Egypt, including Australians, New Zealanders, and British troops frequently bought and mailed local commercial postcards. These cards often featured staged studio portraits, exoticized "pin-up" images, or everyday street scenes of Egyptian women.
