First World War Black and White Photograph of The Pyramids

Overview

A small black and white photograph showing two (2) troopers each sat on a camel in front of the Sphinx and Pyramid at Giza. Two (2) men dressed in local robes, one in white and one in black, are posing with the troopers. In the background is another soldier sat on a camel with three (3) more local men. Further back several people can be seen walking towards the pyramid. The picture is quite dark and there are several fingerprints and other marks on the image. The image has a white border and the reverse has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription in black ink.

Historical information

Australian and New Zealand troops arrived in Egypt in December 1914. They set up Mena Camp near the Great Pyramids outside Cairo and began training in preparation for the Western Front and Gallipoli. Soldiers were allowed leave and visited the pyramids and sphinx at Giza. Many men had their photo taken.
