First World War Black and White Photograph of Beersheba

1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing a group of soldiers working at the ruins of two small buildings. The buildings sit on raised ground that appear to be by a railway track, and there is a rail engine to the right-hand side. The roof of one building shows damage and there are poles and other debris lying on the ground. The soldiers in front of the buildings appear to be digging, while two others can be seen on another ridge (one on horseback). The land is extremely stony. The image has a number of significant blemishes and has a white border. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription.

Historical information

The 10th Light Horse Regiment took part in the battle of Beersheba on 31st October 1917. An account of the regiment’s actions at Beersheba includes “On the following morning (November 2nd) our troops were relieved from the outpost and took up a new position one-mile southeast of the town, near the torn-up railway track running in from the south.” It is possible that this photograph depicts this.
