First World War Postcard of ‘Egyptian Types and Scenes’, Egypt
1900 - 1919A black and white studio postcard depicting the head and shoulders of a woman in elaborate dress. She wears a head scarf adorned with a raised coin style decoration and a forehead ornament. She has a bead choker at her neck and then approximately 5 ornate necklaces of differing lengths and styles (some incorporating the same coin design as her headscarf) around her neck and covering her bodice. Her clothing has embroidered sleeves, shoulders and waist in white and black and there is black fabric under the necklaces. She wears drop earrings and has dark liner on her eyes. She also has a scar on her left cheek. The postcard has significant damage with a large oil stain at the top that shows front and back. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse is a pale green colour with proforma printing.
During First World War, Allied soldiers stationed in Egypt, including Australians, New Zealanders, and British troops frequently bought and mailed local commercial postcards. These cards often featured staged studio portraits, exoticized "pin-up" images, or everyday street scenes of Egyptian women.
