First World War Postcard of ‘Egyptian Types and Scenes - Donkey’, Egypt
1900 - 1918A black and white postcard depicting a front on image of a white donkey wearing a headdress and ornate saddle. The headdress contains what may be a name plate in the centre that sits between its ears with a dark tassel under it. The saddle appears to be a riding one made of leather with stirrups and an ornate under pad. The postcard has some damage to the left side edge and small marks at the bottom front and on the reverse. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse is a pale green colour with proforma printing.
During First World War, Allied soldiers stationed in Egypt, including Australians, New Zealanders, and British troops frequently bought and mailed local commercial postcards. These cards often featured staged studio portraits, exoticized "pin-up" images, or everyday street scenes of Egyptian women.
