First World War Postcard of ‘The Beginning of the Mouski’, Cairo
1900 - 1919A black and white artistic postcard depicting a busy street taken from an elevated point. The image shows European style buildings, some with awnings, on either side of a street. There are people, animals and horse and carts in the street, some walking (including one man with an open umbrella), some standing and some sitting at tables possibly outside a café. As well as tables and chairs, there are vendors along the side of the street. In the distance the minaret of a mosque is visible as well as many advertising signs. On the right-hand side of the image is an open sided building with scaffolding around it at the top. The postcard is in good condition with slight damage to its corners. The front is printed with a description of the image, and depicts many advertising signs. The reverse of the postcard is a pale green colour with dirt marks visible and proforma printing.
This black and white image is identified as the 'Beginning of the Mouski'. El-Mosky is an area of Cairo that was founded by Prince Ess el Din Mosk, a member of the royal family during the reign of Sultan Salah El Din El Ayobe (Saladin). El-Mosky was a market area famous for selling musk, perfumes, spices and exotic goods.
