First World War Postcard of 'Sidi Gaber Mosque', Alexandria
1900 - 1919A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing the prominent minaret and dome of a mosque set on a dirt road. There are palm trees both in front and behind the mosque and it is enclosed within brick walls. There are at least five people in local dress walking on the dirt road in front of the mosque. The postcard is in very good condition with no damage. The left side edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.
Alexandrie is the French spelling of Alexandria. Alexandria played an important role as one of the Allies’ support bases for the Dardanelles attack, both before the landings in Turkey on 25 April 1915 and as a medical centre during the long months of fighting, with the wounded and sick being transported by hospital ships. The modestly sized Ottoman-styled late-19th century Sidi Gaber Mosque was located walking distance from Alexandria’s second railway station. It was rebuilt in 1955.
