First World War Postcard of 'Barges on the Mahmudiya Canal', Alexandria

1900 - 1919
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard depicting a number of boats (feluccas) moored on a waterway. All the boats have masts and furled sails. The boat in the foreground has men working on it and there is a smaller boat on its starboard side, with a man climbing its mast. The wooden rudder of the larger boat is visible as it is out of the water. One side of the water way which is a mix of stone and rocks can be seen . The banks are covered in trees and palms and there are several buildings in view. The postcard is in very good condition with no damage. The left edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

This image depicts the Mahmudiya Canal a sub-channel of the Nile River that began at the Port of Mahmoudia and runs through Alexandria to the Mediterranean Sea. It was constructed in 1819 and diverted shipping to Alexandria, but is now replaced by a major road along the same route.
