First World War Postcard of ‘Abdin Street’, Cairo
1900 - 1919A black and white artistic postcard depicting a street view in a city. There are brick buildings on either side of the road with those on the left-hand side being of a similar build. The building that can be seen on the right-hand side appears larger and more ornate. The street is long and a minaret can be seen in the distance. There are horse and carts travelling on the road and many people walking along the pavement. There are trees and a formal garden outside the building on the right-hand side. The postcard is in good condition with slight damage on one corner. The reverse is a pale green colour with light dirt marks. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.
Around 1900, Abdin Street (now known as Gomhoria Street) in Cairo was a busy European-style thoroughfare featuring classic 19th-century architecture, horse-drawn carriages, and pedestrians in traditional and Western attire, near the Royal Abdeen Palace.
