First World War Black and White Postcard of a Cairo Street

c. 1915
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a narrow dirt street in old Cairo. There are buildings either side that include old wooden frontages and stone walls. Visible above these buildings are the ornate dome and tall minaret of a mosque. The dome has a wavy ribbed effect coming from the centre top. On the street local people can be seen walking in the background with mules, while a trader with his camel carrying two large wicker baskets looks directly at the image taker in the foreground. The postcard is in very good condition, and the reverse has proforma printing and description of the image.

Historical information

This is believed to be an image of Rue Suq al-Silah in Cairo with the Madrasa of Mamluk Amir Uljay al-Yusufi in the picture.
