Swiss Silver Pocket Watch Lid

Overview

Circular white metal lid from a pocket watch. The silver is very dirty and tarnished. The center of the front shows a blank shield style cartouche surrounded by a circular design. The inside of the cover shows 5 markings (likely Swiss silver marks) and a name has been scratched in Capitals.

Historical information

The watch came into the possession of Private William BEER, although it has the name C. McRAE engraved on it. Both Colin McRae 1088 and Frank BEER 512, William’s brother, left Fremantle as part of the first convoy on HMAT A 7 Medic and HMAT A11 Ascanius respectively. William left on 22 February 1915 on HMAT A50 Itonus. All 3 served at Gallipoli with the 11th Battalion with Colin McRAE wounded on the first day of the landings.

Contextual information

The watch cover shows a Swiss hallmark comprising three bears, one small bear above two large bears identifying that the case was hallmarked in Switzerland after 1887. Its maker cannot be identified.
