First World War Postcard of a 'Landscape Near Cairo', Egypt
1900 - 1919A black and white artistic postcard depicting a group of eighteen women and children at a riverbank. Some of the group are standing in the water and others on the bank. There are several clay pots on the ground by the group which may be water containers. One woman can be seen walking carrying a pot on her head. The land behind the group is terraced sand and rock with a steep climb to what it is presumed is a dirt road. Someone can be seen walking up the “terrace”. At the top are several dense palm trees and a stone wall. Halfway up the “terraces” is a bullock. The postcard is in very good condition with no damage. The left edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.
In the 1900s, riverbanks along the Nile in Cairo served as bustling hubs of community life. Women congregated daily to fetch water in large clay pots (known as gollas or zeers), wash clothes, and clean produce.
