First World War Black and White Postcard of Tourists Climbing the Great Pyramids of Cairo
c. 1915A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing three tourists – two women and one man - being assisted by six local men to climb the large stones that make up the edge of a pyramid. The women wear long dresses that appear to be from the late Victorian or Edwardian era and hats. The gentlemen is dressed in a suit and hat. The local men are all dressed in white robes and differing head ware. Each stone appears to be approximately 3 feet high, and it appears that one of the female tourist’s has a rope attached to her waist that is being held by a local man who stands above her. The image has a border that shows several stains and damage at the top. The reverse of the postcard has proforma printing and description of the image. There are large oil stains clearly seen here.
In the 1900s, climbing the pyramids was a popular and legal tourist activity. Thousands of visitors travelled to Egypt, relying on local guides to help them clamber 455 feet up the Great Pyramid of Giza's massive limestone blocks, defying the desert heat in full Edwardian attire.
