First World War Postcard of the 'Port and Customs House', Alexandria

c. 1880
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a very busy port area. The image shows two large ships with sail masts and funnels berthed at the port. The main ship in the picture has several lifeboats visible on the deck. Behind these two ships are many others in the background and then in the very distance a range of buildings are visible. There are a number of sheds on the dockside together as well as two train lines with various open wagons, some loaded with what appears to be wood and others empty. One locomotive can be seen and there are three loaded horse drawn wagons waiting by the rail line. Several people are walking on the dockside and there are piles of logs sitting on the dock edge. The postcard is in very good condition with no damage. The left side edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

Alexandrie is the French spelling of Alexandria. In the 1880s Alexandria harbour was developed to include an inner harbour with breakwaters, coal jetty and inner harbour quays, which saw it become a vital shipping node in the Mediterranean. This image is of a mooring quay at the harbour and is likely taken around 1880.
