First World War Black and White Postcard of the Mosque of the Curieh Cairo

c. 1915
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a busy street in Cairo with the minaret of a mosque featured in the image. The street is of a cobbled stone, where several people dressed in local robes are either walking or standing. One man appears to be either carrying a load or pulling a cart. There are also donkeys on the street. Either side of the street are tall buildings with many windows, awnings (both wooden and cloth) and balconies. The minaret is taller than the other buildings and has an elevated wooden balcony that surrounds the tower and an ornate dome at the top. The postcard has damage to its top corners and there is a large oil stain that is visible both front and back. The reverse has proforma printing and description of the image.

Historical information

The Mosque of the Curieh may be referring to the Sultan al-Ghuri Mosque in Cairo which was founded by Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri in 1503-1504 AD.
