Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a two-sail sailing boat in the middle of a large river. At the bottom of the image the banks of the river can be seen and in the distance on the opposite side of the river are city buildings. There is a smaller rowing boat to the side of the sailboat.

Historical information

The Nile River flows over 6,800 kilometres before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. For thousands of years, the river has provided a source of irrigation to transform the dry area around it into lush agricultural land. Today, the river continues to be a vital freshwater resource for irrigation, drinking water, fishing, and hydroelectric power.
