First World War Black and White Postcard of Native Quarters Cairo

c. 1915
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a part of Cairo that locals are frequenting. The image shows a large brick arch through which two men wearing white robes are emerging – one walking and the other pushing a cart. Two women wearing full long black robes are entering under the arch and approaching what appears to be a market or shops. Ther are several people in the background some standing and some sitting and there are brick or sandstone buildings that can be seen. The image has a border that is undamaged. The reverse of the postcard has proforma printing and description of the image and has no visible stains.

Historical information

Around 1900, Cairo's "native quarters" referred to the historic, medieval districts of the city, largely corresponding to what is now known as Islamic Cairo and Old Cairo.
