First World War Black and White Postcard of a Native Street in Cairo

c. 1915
Overview

A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing a narrow-cobbled street in old Cairo. There is a man visible from behind riding a camel into the street. There are others – men and women - walking in the street. Buildings sit either side of the street that are two or three stories high and shade the area. They have many windows and balconies that overlook the street. The street itself is cobbled stones and very uneven. The postcard has damage to its top corners and there is a large oil stain that is visible both front and back. The reverse has proforma printing and description of the image.

Historical information

Travel through the narrow streets of old Cairo was usually managed with donkeys or by walking. Camels were used to bring heavier goods into the city.
