First World War Postcard of 'Nouzah Gardens', Alexandria
1900 - 1919A sepia-coloured artistic postcard showing large formal gardens. The image is taken from a high point and depicts a winding path going through areas of grass and trees towards a building in the distance. There are three men dressed in suits and hats near the top of the path and a woman further down the path dressed in a skirt and jacket, all walking towards the building. The postcard is in very good condition with no damage. The left side edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.
Alexandrie is the French spelling of Alexandria. Alexandria played an important role as one of the Allies’ support bases for the Dardanelles attack, both before the landings in Turkey on 25 April 1915 and as a medical centre during the long months of fighting, with the wounded and sick being transported by hospital ships. Nouzah Garden (Hadiqat an Nuzhah) is a 150-acre historic park complex located in the Semouha district of Alexandria, Egypt. Established in 1860.
