First World War Postcard of a ‘Native Woman with Her Baby’, Cairo
1900 - 1919A black and white studio postcard depicting a woman standing side on dressed in dark robes with a white lower sleeve and a full face covering with a child sitting on her shoulder resting their head on hers. The child is dressed in a white “dress” with bare legs and arms. The woman appears to be pregnant with her left hand sitting on her belly. The woman stands in front of a studio backdrop of palm trees and a river, with what appears to be “real” rocks in the foreground. The postcard is in very good condition with slight marking on the reverse. The top edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.
During First World War, Allied soldiers stationed in Egypt, including Australians, New Zealanders, and British troops frequently bought and mailed local commercial postcards. These cards often featured staged studio portraits, exoticized "pin-up" images, or everyday street scenes of Egyptian women.
