Overview

Postcard with embossed border and embroidered silk insert decorated with the Australian “Rising Sun” with a brown kangaroo holding the Australian flag ; some wattle and a red flower ; the words “ADVANCE AUSTRALIA”. The back of the card is filled with a handwritten letter in black ink.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front – “ADVANCE AUSTRALIA” with “March 20 1917 My Darling Vera just a card dear / to let you know that I am still / in the land of living. Well love I / am looking for another mail / We have been here just on 3 weeks / and am look for more letters / We have not had our leaf (leave) yet / I only wish it was long enough / to come over there to see you / love it is like years since I saw / you I long for the time to come / When we meet again on the old / Fremantle jetty. I dreamt I was with / you in Albany last night / We had about 6 inches of snow last / night it is verry pritty to all you / can see it for miles around. I long to see it But they can have it all / on there own We have to march / and drill in it, it gives you cold / feet all right. I Went over to stone / eddge (Stonehenge) last Sunday it is / a great Bit of Work how they / got the stone there I will send / you some cards of it. I will / say Good Bye now my Darling / With love and kisses sweetheart xxxxxxxxxxxxx / I am your ever loving/ Ted xxx” on back. Also on back of card in red print “TUCK’S POST / CARTE POSTALE” and Stamp of the Royal Coat of Arms.
