Overview

Sepia tone photograph of a soldier sitting on a wooden bench smoking a cigarette and reading. He has his slouch hat and uniform on and there is a young woman looking over his shoulder. There is a verse in the top left-hand corner. On the back is a handwritten letter over the printed postcard markings.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front of card “For old Time’s Sake / I send to you this little rhyme / With fondest thoughts for Auld Lang Syne / And as you tread the path of life / May you be free from care and strife” with “Sunday 6 1917 / 1 / My Darling Vera just a card / or two to let you know that / I am ok. We went down to a / little Place about 3 miles from here / it is called Figheldean Were the / Village Black smith was and / seen the chestnut tree there was. a lot down I see a lot scratching / like a lot of old hens I must have / a look and have a go Well we / got some nuts that had fallen / off the tree last year / I got two / I will send them to you soon / and then we went in to the / little church had a good look / round I only Wish you was / With me to see the sights / there is a little river not far / from there and we see some / fish in I did long for some / We get fish here I think / they are six week old when / we get them we call the / flying fish one cup of Porridge / and half a round of dry Bread / and one fish for Breakfast / We have to be on Parade at six / now and do an hours drill / before Breakfast it is hard” handwritten in black ink.
