First World War Souvenir Card sent home from Pte. Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE, 6351
1917Very elaborate South African souvenir card with printing in green ink on front. Inside is a print of a bushy landscape scene and a set of 3 fabric painted leaves. On the back is a handwritten letter. Foxing evident on front and inside with noticeable brown stain on back of card. Corners damaged.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “EVERLASTING / SILVER LEAVES / From Sunny South Africa” In centre “On the road to Camps Bay / A Tribute of Love / A Silver Leaf / From Table Mountain / With Love” On back “Wis 17 1917 / My Dear Vera / just this little / card to let you / know that I am Well / and having a good / look around Cape Town / It is a Pritty Place / We may be here / for two or three days / there is no ricksha hear / The Laidys of the town / gave us Tea. Well good Bye love I am / yours ever true Teddy / xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx” written in black ink.
Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE bought this card while in Cape Town, South Africa on route to Devonport, England in 1917.
