Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019

On the front “West Street Central, Durban” with “There were two Troop ships in Durban / and [sic] [sic] from other steamers and / some ships it is a Big Place We came / in early in The morning It was / a lovely view. They were / throwing all the scraps to the / Blacks you would have laugh to / seen them They will eat / any thing there is three y.m.c.a. / is hear the People up the YM / were verry kind to us every / thing we wanted. The Blacks called / us they get 2 pounds a mounth and / visitors get 30 / and cooks get 3 pound / 5s and 6 pounds a mounth cheep laBour…” on back.
