1917Postcard with coloured print of the ship S.S. PERSIC on a rough sea under steam. Black hull and yellow funnel with smoke billowing out of funnel and four flags flying. Corners of card worn. On back purple printing of postcard with handwritten letter in black ink.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On back of card “No 6351 18/2 30.1917 / My Darling Vera / just this card to let you see / our old tub / Well love I have /missed you since We left / When I am on guard I picture / you at your Work / I would / like to Be in the church with / you now / We have church every / sunday on hear / I whent to / church in Cape Town it is just / like your church / I only wish / I could speak to you now and / Tell you all about the trip / I have left you Dear and many / miles away But remember love / I am always thinking of you / and will be true to you / I have / no need to ask you I know / you Will. I have wrote a letter / home to you so I Will close / now / Give my love to Mr and Mrs [sic] / With love and kisses from your / ever loving sweetheart Ted xxx” written in black ink.
