First World War Field Service Postcard from Pte. Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE, 6351
1918Official Field Service postcard with United Kingdom Coat of Arms and ‘Army Post Office / A SP 25 / 18 S.W.3’ stamp in black ink. Handwritten in purple ink is the address of Miss Vera Verge. Back of card is preprinted in black ink with some handwriting in available spaces in purple ink. Some of the printing has been crossed out with purple ink. Some foxing is evident on front and back.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front printed in black ink “A.F.A. 2042. / 114/Gen.No./5248. / FIELD SERVICE POSTCARD / ARMY POST OFFICE S.W.3. / A SP 25 18” then in italics “The address only to be written on this side. If anything else is added the postcard will be destroyed. [Crown Copyright Reserved.]” In purple pencil “Miss V Cerge / 405 Oxford St / Mt Hawthorn / Leederville / Via Perth / West Australia” Pencil has smudged in places. On back of card printed in black ink “NOTHING is to be written on this side except / the date and signature of the sender. Sentences / not required may be erased. If anything else is / added the post card will be destroyed. / [Postage must be prepaid on any letter or post card / addressed to the sender of this card.] I am quite well. / I have been admitted into hospital {sick} {wounded} and am going on well. / and hope to be discharged soon. / I am being sent down to the base. / I have received your / letter dated…. / telegram … / parcel …. / Letter follows at first opportunity. / I have received no letter from you / lately…. / for a long time…. / Signature / only…./ Date …". Handwritten in purple ink in appropriate places “July / EC Mouchemore / Sept 22.9.1918”.
