First World War Postcard ‘Honour To Australia’ sent home by Pte. Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE, 6351

Overview

Postcard with embossed borders and embroidered silk insert. Some foxing on insert and borders. In the centre is the ‘Rising Sun’ emblem in gold thread with red crown and with ‘AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH MILITARY FORCES’ neatly embroidered in red stitching underneath. Above the Australian flag has been embroidered and below ‘HONOUR TO AUSTRALIA’ is stitched in pale blue thread. On the back is an extensive letter handwritten in pencil.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front of card “AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH MILITARY FORCES / HONOUR TO AUSTRALIA” On back of card “March 23.3.1917 / My darling Vera / just another card love to let / you know that I am still alive / This place is getting me down / and worrying me / I have a pretty / good cold / There was a Bit / of start hear the other morning / they had us up at 6 all the 17/28 / full pack and all other lot / in the camp a lot of our / chaps Were Put to work and / they said fall in all that is / not doing any. I was right / there thing to go with the 17 But / it was guard I did not do much / I did not go out the guard room / anyhow [sic] did not go / some of the other lots Went some / were I don’t know were. I wish / I had some of your great head / Well Goodbye My love I am / yours ever loving Love to home / Ted xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx” written in pencil.
