GALLOP JAMES II

Overview

B/W Print of sepia studio portrait of a man seated in a chair with hands in his lap. He has neatly brushed hair, a moustache and beard. Over shirt, tie and waistcoat, he is wearing a loose-fitting, single-breasted jacket with a single button under the small revers. Original appears to have been mounted on cream card.

Historical information

Current Gallop House was built for James Gallop II in 1877 when he married Emma Wood in December. They had 6 sons and 2 daughters, one of whom, a stillborn infant lies buried on the hill near Gallop House. James Gallop II inherited the Dalkeith property. He sold 175 acres in 1896 to Alexander Forrest, retaining 145 acres of river frontage. In 1911 he sold the remainder to the Government to provide a continuos river road from Perth to Claremont. He built Dalkeith House in High Street, Fremantle. He also built Dalkeith Opera House, which later became the King's Theatre in Fremantle. Original photos were in a family bible on loan to the Museum.
