Historical information

Born near Brighton, Sussex, on 17 June, 1811, James Gallop came to WA with older brother, Richard and younger brother Edward. They arrived in Fremantle on 6 October, 1829, on the 'Lotus' the sixth ship bringing settlers to the colony. The brothers were indentured to a speculator who had been proclaimed bankrupt by the time they arrived and was later imprisoned. In 1838 a lease agreement shows that James and Richard worked a dairy farm at Crawley Park. In 1847, James bought 65 acres of the Dalkeith property for $250 and in 1865 acquired a balance of 255 acres for $50.
On October 18, 1843, he married Elizabeth Spencer. James and Elizabeth had nine children who lived to maturity. James died on 20 January, 1880 and is buried in a double grave with his wife at the East Perth Cemetery.Original photos were in a family bible on loan to the Museum.
