GALLOP ELIZABETH NEE SPENCER
c. 1865B/W Print of studio portrait of a mature woman seated on a straight-backed chair. One hand is in her lap, the other resting on a table covered with a patterned cloth and and holding a jardeniere with plant. She is wearing a dark, long-sleeved outfit with boned bodice trimmed with braid and buttons and light collar and cuffs . This is partially covered by a three quarter length cape which drapes over her long, full skirt. In the background are heavy curtains with tassels.
Arrived in WA on 5 August, 1829, on the 'Calista', the second ship bringing settlers to the colony. Aged 4, she was accompanied by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Spencer and her brother, John, born 9 days before arrival at Fremantle. After their arrival the Spencers had seven more children. As an indentured servant, Charles Spencer's first efforts to obtain an allotment failed but, with the assistance of Lionel Samson and considering the value of the possessions brought with him, land on which to build a home was secured. In 1833 he sold the home he had built in Cantonment Street, Fremantle and took up land at Mt Henry.
On October 18, 1843 Elizabeth married James Gallop. She had nine children who survived to maturity and she died of consumption after a long illness on 22 November, 1872. She is buried in a double grave with her husband, James, at East Perth Cemetery.
Children: Alice (b.1868), Ann (b. 1847), Ann, (b.1852), Caroline Hannah (b. 1855), Edward (b. 1854), Emma (b. 1857), George (b. 1862), James (b. 1845), Jane (b. 1865), John Richard (b. 1860), Mary Jane (b.1863) & Sarah (b. 1844). Original photos were in a family bible on loan to the Museum.
