LAKEWAY DRIVE IN THEATRE

Overview

B/W prints (a) David Brand, shovel in hand, planting a tree at the Official Opening, in front of the drive in entrance. Spectators are behind a rope barrier. (b) Entrance with three short brick walls joined by a roof to form two driveways. Above is a sign [Lakeway/DRIVE IN]. There are two brick plant boxes and small trees in containers ready to be planted. Ropes across the entrances have signs [CLOSED] on them. (c) The projection room; a square brick building with flat roof, windows on one side and four square holes in the other wall for projection purposes. A low fence in front. (d) Looking to the north west from the rear. The screen is in the lower right corner, projection box in the centre and the contoured area has rows of speakers . (e) Looking to the south east, showing small trees, local housing, the back of the drive in screen, projection box, refreshment kiosk, and in the far right the entrance. Beyond the Drive in is Lake Claremont and housing in the background. (f) On the south side of the viewing area is the kiosk where refreshments were served. (g) The area behind the kiosk with seating under umbrellas surrounded by a newly planted garden.

Historical information

One of a chain of drive-in theatres with names such as Skyway. Situated in Narla Road, Swanbourne. Approval to build theatre granted 15/1/1957. The original lease ran from 1956 to 1982. It was between Claremont Council and Lake Claremont Drive-In Pty Ltd and Ace Theatres. Lakeway opened to the public 18 April 1957. In 1982 the lease was assigned to Odeon Theatres. Leased to Family Films of WA from 1/9/84. Lease terminated 31/1/85. Leased to Marsden Cinemas, c/- Savoy Cinema, 636 Hay St Perth. Commenced 29/3/85. Theatre closed 11/7/85. In 1988 Claremont Council began preparing subdivision plans for the site.
