Victorian Golf Association War Medallion won by J. Jones 1946
1946Thick circular metal medallion mounted vertically on a round metal base. One side of the medallion features a depiction of an Australian soldier dressed in his uniform and slouch hat, holding a rifle. A rising sun is behind him. The other side features a golfer completing his swing. The words 'Victorian Golf Association War Medallion' are written on a raised border around the outside of this face. The maker's details, 'C.E.' (Charles Eccles, the die maker) and Amor, are written either side of the golfer's feet.
The metal base is made from bronze and is engraved on the horizontal surface with 'Won by J. Jones 1946'. The lower surface is covered with a piece of black felt.
Various sporting organisations hosted days during and after both world wars where entry fees contributed to charities which supported serving and returned veterans.
Several medallions awarded for winning such competitions are held in the collection including for billiards, lawn tennis and golf.
