Australian Red Cross Society tennis medallion
c. 1940Circular bronze medallion awarded as a prize by the Australian Red Cross Society for winning a tennis competition during World War Two.
One side features the head of a nurse wearing a veil, facing to the left. The words 'Australian Red Cross Society' appear around the upper arc of the medallion in raised lettering.
The reverse depicts a figure of a man serving a tennis ball to the right, dressed in long trousers and a short-sleeved shirt. The name of the maker 'Luke Melb' is written underneath the right side of the tennis player's feet.
The rim of the medallion is plain.
Various sporting organisations hosted days during and after both world wars where entry fees contributed to charities which supported serving and returned veterans.
Several medallions awarded for winning such competitions are held in the collection including for billiards, lawn tennis and golf.
