International Red Cross Parcel, Guernsey Channel Islands metal token
1944Uniface, circular zinc token produced by the International Red Cross for inclusion in food parcels sent to Guernsey, Channel Islands towards the end of World War Two.
It has a central outline of a cross with the word 'Guernsey' above and 'Channel Islands' below. This is surrounded by a circular border of adjoining dots. Between the rim of the token and the dot border are the words 'International Red Cross' at the top, and 'Parcel' below.
The reverse of the token is plain.
According to the Numismatics International Bulletin, Vol. 15, No.4 (1981), "After D-Day 1944, the Channel Islands were cut off from France and their food situation deteriorated rapidly. Without help, the populace faced starvation. Messages were sent in November 1944 to the Secretary General of the International Red Cross at Geneva, resulting in the delivery of food parcels late in December 1944. Thereafter, the Red Cross ship, Vega, made monthly trips to the islands."
Two of these tokens are held in the collection.
