The Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria War Funds Appeal trophy on mulga base
c. 1941The Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria War Funds Appeal medallion mounted vertically on a circular, turned mulga timber base as a trophy or prize.
One side of the medallion depicts a male tennis player moving right playing a backhand. The name of the designer, Alan McCulloch, and the date '41' appear below, The other side features a central depiction of a rifle, helmet and uniform above a blank rectangular plaque where the winner's name could be engraved. The words 'World War II' are written below the blank plaque, while 'The Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria' is printed in raised letters around the upper edge and 'War Funds Appeal' around the lower edge.
The hemispherical base is made from mulga wood in tones of light and dark brown into which the medallion is secured. The underside of the base has a central cavity where the metal attachment can be seen, and a gold painted map of Australia sans Tasmania containing the words 'Genuine Australian Mulga'.
The Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria held a tennis drive in March 1942 to raise funds for charities including the Red Cross and Australian Comforts Fund.
An article in The Age newspaper, dated 12 November 1941 stated that "The Lawn Tennis Association or Victoria, at its meeting at Kooyong last night, approved a scheme for a State-wide tennis drive in March to aid the Red Cross and Comforts Fund. The drive will be known as the L.T.A.V. war funds drive, and will be organised by the Red Cross and Comforts Fund under the direction of the association. Sporting goods manufacturer have indicated their willingness to provide 100 prizes, which will be distributed by lots to courts, clubs and associations raising more than £1. Those raising over £5 will each receive two L.T.A.V. plaques as trophies. Mr. C. R. Cowling, chairman of the organising committee, said the drive might mean the establishment of a "new order" for tennis in the State. The association appealed not only to affiliated clubs and associations, but also to unaffiliated bodies and owners of private courts to assist in one immense effort."
Various sporting organisations hosted days during and after both world wars where entry fees contributed to charities which supported serving and returned veterans.
Several medallions awarded for winning such competitions are held in the collection including for billiards, lawn tennis and golf.
This medallion was struck by Stokes & Sons in 1941 from a die created by Alan McCulloch. The trophy with mounted medallion was likely to have been made in late 1941 or early 1942, prior to the tennis drive in March 1942.
