Australian Red Cross Society Fireman badge
Metal and enamel Australian Red Cross Society Fireman badge, featuring a circular silver top with a central enamel red cross and the words 'Australian Red Cross Society' around the edge. This is sitting on top of a scroll containing the word 'Fireman'.
The reverse of the badge has two attached metal spikes which are both bent inwards. They may have had metal pin backs, but these are missing.
The maker's name, Swann & Hudson, is on the reverse in raised lettering.
Swann & Hudson was founded by Fredrick Swann and Norman Hudson in 1947 in Frankston, Victoria. They first produced military badges, uniform buttons, and medallions for the Australian government, and became known for their expertise in forging enamel badges.
The style of this badge made with very shiny silver metal dates to much later, perhaps the 1970s, when comparable badges and buckles were produced.
A cloth patch with a red cross and the word 'Fireman' stitched on it is also held in the collection.
