First World War Postcard of The Tombs of the Mamluks and the Citadel, Cairo

1900 - 1919
Overview

A black and white postcard depicting the domes and minarets of several tombs located together. One building with at least 4 domes and two tall minarets sits away from the others atop of a hill. The approach to the buildings is over rough stony land and wheel tracks can be seen in one area. The postcard is in very good condition front and back. The side edge has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

The image is a vintage postcard of the Tombs of the Mamluks (often called the Tombs of the Caliphs) with the Cairo Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in the background. The Mamluk-era mausoleums and domes appear in the foreground and middle ground, featuring characteristic stone masonry and tall minarets. The prominent Mosque of Muhammad Ali sits atop the citadel hill on the right side of the frame.
