First World War Postcard of An Arab Street, Cairo

1900 - 1917
Overview

A black and white postcard depicting a street in Cairo. Brick buildings frame either side of the street and a tall minaret sits in the distance at the end. Awnings and flags can be seen hanging from the buildings across the street. A local man in traditional attire and a head covering is walking towards the photographer with his donkey carrying baskets. Other people and carts can be seen in the background. The postcard is in good condition although the top edge has been creased. The top edge also has perforations that suggest it was separated from another card. The front is printed with a description of the image, and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

Around 1900, donkeys equipped with woven baskets were the primary backbone of transport, agriculture, and urban commerce across Egypt. Dual Side Panniers (Shwary) were large, twin baskets woven from local palm fronds (greeb) or reeds. They were slung symmetrically over the donkey's back to balance the weight evenly.
