1917Coloured photographic postcard showing one of the main roads leading down to the sea with a double-decker tram and a few pedestrians. On the back is a handwritten letter.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On the front “West Street East End, Durban” with “Sunday 14.1.1917 / My Dear Vera just a few more / cards We have just left Durban 5pm / The People of the Town gave us a good / Time There was a lot to see us off / The jetty is 2 [and a half] miles from the / town you go by car or ricksha / the ricksha are verry good the / niggers are verry funny dressed / up to kill there is a lot of Blacks / hear it is a verry pritty Place / every thing is so green fruit / is verry Dear apples 2/2/6 3/ a Dozen / Pineapples are cheep 4 for 1/ grapes 1/8 / and 2/ a lbs I went out to the zoo…”
