Royal Aero Club of N.S.W. car badge mounted on timber plaque

c. 1930
Overview

Royal Aero Club of N.S.W. car badge mounted on a circular timber plaque. The badge is made from metal with an enamel front. It has a circular centre featuring the logo of the aero club - a kangaroo with wings - in deep red outlined in gold on a pale blue background.
The words "The Royal Aero Club of N.S.W. are written below, again in deep red with a thin gold border. The Kings Crown is attached to the top of the circular centre and is in silver metal with red enamel detailing.
The bottom part of the car badge where it would have attached to the vehicle has been ground off for mounting on the timber plaque.
The backing is made from a hardwood with fine straight grain and has a tapered edge.
The reverse has a small rectangular metal plate held in by two screws near the top. It has a void to hang over a nail for suspension.
Below this is a white sticker with a blue border which gives details about the former owner, Axel Sigurdsson von Goës.

Historical information

This vintage enamel car badge is in excellent condition, which may mean it wasn't attached to a vehicle for a lengthy period. Other examples are chipped, scratched and otherwise damaged due to rocks, insects and wildlife.
Although the back of the metal badge is hidden, it is likely to have been made by Angus & Coote, Ltd, jewellers of Sydney.

Axel Sigurdsson von Goës was an early member of the Royal Aero Club of N.S.W. He learnt to fly aged 21 when he bought a Leopard Moth in 1936. His father was the Swedish Consul General to Australia and Axel was born in Sydney.
It is unknown what the letters and numbers on the sticker signify - perhaps a type of vehicle and a numberplate.
