A.I.F. Memorial fundraising pin - gold
1918A.I.F. Memorial fundraising pin comprising a circular disc made of gilded metal with red and blue enamel detailing.
The outer rim of red enamel bordered on both sides with a thin line of gold contains the embedded words 'A.I.F. MEMORIAL AUG 2 1918'.
The central area contains a gold brick, orientated lengthways, with the front face filled with royal blue enamel. There is a wreath below the brick in gold and a golden arrow extending vertically downwards beyond the rim of the badge at the bottom.
A gold metal loop is attached at the top edge, through which a grey metal pin with a blunt end is threaded for attachment.
The maker's name, 'Angus & Coote, Ld, Sydney' is written on the back in raised letters.
On 2 August 1918 the Returned Soldiers' Association of New South Wales organised a collection day for the Memorial building, with the money collected intended to honour all who served in the A.I.F. during the war, including those who had returned. The day featured such activities as processions of schoolchildren, callisthenic displays, stalls, dinners, slide shows and other entertainments.
A range of fundraising pins and badges were sold for different amounts, but all featured the brick logo. This particular badge and its silver counterpart sold for 5 shillings.
The NSW Government also issued a fundraising pin entitled 'A.I.F. Memorial Public Schools Effort' to be sold to students for 3 pennies.
