WWII Female Relative's Badge with three stars issued to Edith May Chalklen
c. 1942Circular white metal badge edged by a wreath surmounted by a King's crown. In the centre is a map of Australia surrounded by a depiction of linked chain and the words 'TO THE WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA' in raised lettering.
Suspended below the badge by a pair of rings is a bar with three, seven pointed bronze stars attached. The reverse is impressed with the serial number 'A142917' and has the raised words 'ISSUED BY THE C'WLTH GOVT' and 'ANGUS & COOTE 1942'.
The badge has a pin fastening on the back and a safety chain and pin attached to one of the crown's arches.
This badge was issued to Edith May Chalklen who had three sons serving during World War Two: Albert Sidney (Sid), 43 Infantry Battalion AMF (service numbers S17103, SX35562); Ronald Jack, 2/6th Infantry Battalion (service numbers S38181, SX20345); and William George, Supply Depot Companies/Platoons, (service numbers S42326, SX27299). All of her sons served in Australia before being posted overseas, and all came home safely.
This badge was of great social significance as it was a way of recognising the wartime sacrifice of women and especially mothers.
