Historical information

This badge was issued to Amy Elizabeth Butterly of Quinlan Street, Goomalling, Western Australia on 7 December 1942. Her son, Edward Roy Butterly, served with the 2/32 Battalion during World War Two.

Edward was born on 10 July 1919 in York, Western Australia. He was a day short of his 22nd birthday when he enlisted at Claremont on 9 July 1941. His occupation was listed as a printer's assistant. He was taken a prisoner of war in the Middle East on 17 July 1942 and was interned in Camp 57 (3 May 1943) and Camp 106 (27 July 1943) before eventually being liberated ex Switzerland to Italy on 7 October 1944. He was discharged on 5 May 1945.

This badge was of great social significance as it was a way of recognising the wartime sacrifice of women and especially mothers.
