Royal Air Force handmade silver tone sweetheart brooch

c. 1939
Overview

World War Two era Royal Air Force silver tone sweetheart brooch.
It appears to be cast from a single piece of metal and features outspread pilot wings flanking a central wreath containing the letters 'RAF', surmounted by a King's Crown.
The upper part of the wings are plain silver, while the lower parts are etched, along with the letters 'RAF' and the detail of the crown, which all appear black. The writing and detail are done in an amateurish fashion, indicating the piece may be trench art.
It is possible that the base metal is sterling silver, but there are no marks to indicate this.
The reverse of the brooch is plain and it has a pin clasp for attachment.

Historical information

This sweetheart brooch is one of many produced and sold to servicemen to give to their loved ones during wartime.
