Overview

These items are made of a lightweight plastic with regularly spaced holes in imitation of embroidery canvas.

a. Square mesh, 8 holes per inch

b. Round mesh, 6 holes per inch on perimeter, reducing towards the centre.

c. Round mesh with raised centre, 6 holes per inch

The openwork-grid surface has a number of holes per inch, referred to as the “mesh.”

Is used for counted embroidery stitches, also weavings of yarn, ribbons, and other materials.

Flat pieces make bookmarks, coasters and place mats. Bendable and easy to cut, makes it possible to create 3D objects such as purses, boxes, jewellery etc.

Available since the 1970s. It comes in various mesh counts, notably 5, 7, 10 and 14 holes per inch.

The most widely used form is the 7-mesh version. Also known as vinyl weave.

HISTORY

Plastic canvas, an embroidery canvas is made from plastic, a lightweight vinyl with regularly spaced holes. Available since the 1970s. It is available in many different colours, shapes, and sizes. It is often sold in A4 size sheets which can be cut into any size or shape. Also comes in some pre-made forms such as circles, triangles and novelty shapes such as animals, birds and hearts.
