Overview

A set of cute hand embroidered applique motifs for a child’s garment, depicting cartoon characters from of 1950s. Purchased and used on children’s clothing in India.

Motifs have been hand embroidered on cotton headcloth. Outlines in buttonhole stitch.

a) Porky Pig is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon series.

b) Donald Duck wearing a green cap – Walt Disney cartoon character created in 1934, uncle to his 3 nephews -

c) Huey (original duck not cartoon) with floral design (d) Dewey balancing balls (e) Louie wearing a bonnet -

cartoon characters created by Carl Barks and Al Taliaferro for The Walt Disney Company in 1937.

f) Dick Whittington and (g) Dick Whittington’s black cat from English folklore.

j) Paper bag in which they were originally purchased in Calcutta, India in 1952. Front reads:

“THE GOOD COMPANIONS 13C Russell Street CALCUTTA”

i) Leaflet “ADORABLE ANIMALS” PATTERN No R 2989 for embroidering on baby clothes and nursery linen

from magazine The New Idea 4/7/51 which came from the Collection archives confirming date.

No cartoon characters shown, but there is a duck – see ( c) above.
