Historical information

Sarah Jane Buckingham (nee Holt) was born in 1857 and died 10 July 1940 age 83. In 1879 she married William Buckingham in Kelmscott and they lived in a cottage on what would become Araluen. Together they had 13 children. She is buried with William in the St Mary's In the Valley Anglican Church cemetery.
The Buckingham family had arrived at the Swan Colony in 1850 aboard the Sofia. They first moved to the Bullsbrook area but in 1857 leased a large tract of land in Roleystone from the Churchman Sisters. The Buckingham's eventually ended up purchasing the land and settling in the area where descendent can still be found. The Buckingham family played an important role in establishing many local businesses and community organisations in Kelmscott in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
